DRACO

He was flying.

Somehow, it was too dark. Draco could feel his wings beating, and the air rushed around him as if he were navigating slipstreams, but he couldn’t see anything.

His shifter eyes should have been able to pick out the stars in the sky if it was night. If it was cloudy, he’d still be able to see the shapes of the clouds smudged against the sky.

There was nothing below him. No landmarks, no lights.

Where am I? What sky is this?

Draco felt fear throbbing through his blood. A sky so dark that he couldn’t see the stars, the Earth so black, he didn’t know where he flew … these things did not make any sense.

Suddenly, the wind against his wings changed direction. Instead of lifting him and holding him high, it twisted and screamed. With complete horror, he realized the gravity of his situation.

I’m not flying! I’m falling!

He tried to scream, but the wind stole his voice. It felt like something heavy on his chest prevented him from crying out just as the harsh, cold wind stole any warmth from his throat.

If there is no sky and no land, will I just fall forever?

His body twisted, desperate to escape his fate. This was worse than Hell. A place where a dragon’s wings had no power, where he would wait every moment for the shock of the ground to pulverize every bone in his body but never knowing when the moment of impact would come.

Again, he tried to scream. Like the last time he’d tried, his chest would not expand to draw in enough breath.

I’m smothering!

Somewhere, in the screaming wind, he heard a voice. At first, he couldn’t make it out. It was one sweet note in a cacophony of horror. The screaming of the air around him played against this far-off music, discord demanding that he give in to fear.

His terror almost won. At the moment he almost gave in to the fall, the sweet, gentle sound broke through the horror loud and clear.

Draco.

He struggled, his whole body jerking against the nightmare. He knew that voice!

Draco.

The whisper came again, louder this time. He used every last ounce of strength to struggle through the void.

Draco. I need you!

I need you too!

Finally, he drew in a deep breath. He tried to roar as he shook off the darkness. As he struggled, he realized his eyes were closed, and his body was heavy.

I’m not flying. I’m unconscious!

He could hear his mate’s voice and smell her sweet perfume. He would struggle against the forces of Hell itself to see her again. He could not give up.

The great roar he tried to force through his throat only came out as a groan, but he did manage to get his eyes open. It was like trying to push a solid steel storm door with his pinky finger, but he threw all of his strength into the final effort.

Light stunned him, forcing its way into his pupils. Gasping for air, he turned his head slightly toward the scent of his mate.
